For lovers of “incomprehensible cinema”, of films that leave you confused and with many questions, and that are reason enough to debate and talk for hours in order to try to understand its plot (such as the great works of David Lynch or Stanley Kubrick), we present our list of the most complicated movies that will make your head explode.
In the cinema there are different genres that give life to our favorite movies, from the most intense dramas and the most macabre horror, to the suspense and mystery of a criminal thriller , or a good science fiction movie. But between established genres we also find different works that end up being classified as cult films , film geek and many more.
From the incredible David Lynch to Stanley Kubrick, some of the best complicated movies in historyPersonally, I am fascinated by a type of film that I, and so many others, know as “WTF movies” , at least informally.
In this category we find complicated movies that are a headache for those who watch them, when you try to understand them. Understand what happened in those last two hours of your life; try to understand the plot, the mystery that the writer and director presented, or simply a message that conveys the film. David Lynch is famous for this, for making such complicated movies that can explode our brain. In fact, I could make a complete article of complicated films only with the works of David Lynch, the eccentric (and somewhat creepy ) director.

Donnie Darko
One of the darkest psychological thrillers I’ve seen in my life. Donnie Darko (2001) tells the story of a high school student who has visions about the end of the world and a disturbing, demonic and creepy and giant rabbit, called Frank, who is the one who warns Donnie about the end that it’s coming.
Donnie is tormented both in his nightmares and in reality by this rabbit, Frank, although during the movie his visions become more continuous and dark, while we, the spectators, are confused without understanding what happens, if the rabbit is real or no, if the end is near, and finally we witness a shocking outcome. A work of art that I had to see twice to “understand” in its entirety.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Stanley Kubrick was a teacher, a great cinema, and each of his works is worthy of admiration. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) is no exception, in fact, it is one of my favorite films by the director and screenwriter. 2001 has an incredibly complicated plot and an incomprehensible start, at least until the film is very advanced, perhaps; where the filmmaker takes advantage of the potential of science fiction to show us his vision of the evolution and transcendence of humanity, in an impressive way and with a great mystery.
Kubrick had the participation of science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke to perform the script for this film, and the result was masterful. We will travel from the beginning of humanity to a somewhat utopian future, perhaps much to be eternal, and HAL 9000 will accompany us in this odyssey to any planet, and anywhere in space.
Less Europe, it can take us anywhere except the moon (or natural satellite) Jupiter Europe.
Memento
Before the name of Christopher Nolan was associated with Batman, the director and screenwriter made masterly films and extremely complicated to understand as Memento (2000) . Known as “Amnesia” in Latin America, it is one of the most confusing movies I’ve seen in my life.
Memento is based on the story of Leonard, a man who suffers from a strange mental condition of short-term memory losses, that is, he can only store a certain amount of memories, so the new ones will “erase” the old (and not so old). Therefore, he will tattoo and keep notes and photographs of the things he really does not want to forget, all this while trying to catch the man who possibly murdered his wife.
Mulholland Drive
One of the masterpieces of David Lynch , the best known filmmaker in the genre of “WTF movies” (if such a thing exists). Today I have seen this movie twice and I still don’t understand it, it’s the reality. Lynch says his work is divided into three parts to present a completely linear story, but full of confusion and mystery.
In fact, between mystery and illusion the film that tells us the story of a woman who survives a strange car accident on the road that bears the name of the film, Mulholland Drive (2001) , moves in the city of Los Angeles. However, after the accident the woman suffers from severe amnesia, so treating the film tries to reveal, in her own way, who this woman is and what her story is, as she discovers it. Naomi Watts plays a masterful role in this film, and in fact, catapulted her to fame.
The Tree of life
Few movies with temporary breaks have caught me as much as The Tree of Life (2011) . In it, we witness (in its own way) the story of a family that suffers a hard loss in the 50s. From there, we will see the evolution of the eldest son of this family struggling to make a place in a world that is not so beautiful as he thought, as his parents try to approach him.
A drama with a lot of depth and a sad and dark story, which leads us to the present and past constantly, again and again, with masterful performances by Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain.
Solaris
Solaris , the original made in Russia in 1972, and not the American remake of 2002, is a science fiction film based on the novel by a Polish writer named Stanislaw Lem. It is based on a psychologist’s trip to a space station in the distant future, to investigate why all its inhabitants have gone mad. In the film they show the complicated relationship in a future where humans are distant from each other, in addition to the difficult task of relating to the unknown.
Fight Club
The life of an office worker changes dramatically when one day he decides to turn his life around, thanks to the fact that he met a strange character whose life is based on making soaps. Fight Club (1999) , directed by David Fincher, is a psychological thriller full of drama and action, which although it seems to be based simply on a clandestine fighting club where you are going to punch and vent the problems of our boring lives (or at least they show it in the film), the reality of the film transcends much more, telling the story of a person full of problems, insomnia and traumas who live a very disturbed life, and really do not know himself.
Blue velvet
David Lynch returns to the charge in our compilation with Blue Velvet (1986) , a complicated film full of surrealism and criminal drama, where a man discovers a human ear in a field and this encourages him to investigate what has happened, and how he has come to there, everything to get involved in a crime related to a beautiful singer and a mystery that, honestly, will be difficult to understand, even when you finish watching the movie.
Between Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet and Eraserhead we find the most acclaimed and complicated films of the director and writer. Lynch is a teacher in leaving us with more doubts than we had, when watching a movie.
AND OF COURSE: Inception
Christopher Nolan also returns to our list with another of his great works, Inception (2010) . A film with a plot of the most entanglement and whose end can be taken with different meanings by each. In the film, Nolan shows us the story of an “extractor”, a man in charge of extracting memories from people’s minds while they sleep, who will be involved in a complicated crime and mystery that will touch the limits of madness.
The most surprising thing about Inception is how the movie is based on dreams, and even on dreaming that we dream, so in several parts you will not be sure if the characters have woken up or are still dreaming.
First
Perhaps the least known of our list, Primer (2004) tells us the story of a group of entrepreneurial engineers who work in a company by day, but at night they dedicate it to creating their own technologies with the ambition to attract the attention of investors and debut in the market like the new Bill Gates. However, in the process of inventing a new product, the result is not as expected, and they end up creating a time machine that will unleash a series of unexplained events and mysteries. A must-see movie for lovers of the genre “WTF”, or complicated movies.
And so, here 10 of the most complicated and movies like Inception in history that will leave you confused, with an expression of lost in the face, and with the need to see them again to find out what really happened (or to throw the remote control to the TV screen).
